History:
The Café Bellaria is located in a historically significant area of Vienna’s cultural mile, close to the Naturhistorisches Museum, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Museumsquartier, Volkstheater, Burgtheater, Justizpalast, Parliament and Volksgarten. Emperor Franz Joseph gave the Bellaria this name because he enjoyed walking up from the Hofburg and considered the air to be very pleasant (Bellaria means pleasant, fresh air in Italian). In the Middle Ages the Bellaria Straße was part of the suburbs outside the Widmer gate of the Vienna city walls. With its many regular guests, including quite a few celebrities such as actors, journalists and politicians, the café is a place of easy-going sociability.

The Bellaria Café features friendly hospitality in the traditional sense without having to dispense with the amenities of modern life. The Bellaria was the starting point of the first Viennese horse-drawn tram, which from 1817 was connected to Döbling by rail, was later operated by steam and finally by electricity. The cinema Bellaria Kino in the Museumsstraße also became a legend because, from the time it was built in 1912 and for decades after, it stood as the last refuge of the German-Austrian film entertainment industry.

The Movie Location:
The Café Bellaria served as a film set showing a bakery and pastry shop by royal appointment in the Dual Monarchy in Ernst Marischka’s hit film “Die Deutschmeister” with Romy Schneider, Hans Moser, and Maria Perschy, featuring Paul Hörbiger as Emperor Franz Joseph. In the early era of sound film, big names such as Marlene Dietrich, Marika Röck, Zarah Leander, Hans Moser, Paula Wessely, Paul Hörbiger and Theo Lingen performed successfully here. Today, the café serves as the meeting place of the Franz Antel “artists table” for young and old! The great Austrian film director Franz Antel often used the Café as a film set in several of his many movies!

Only a few metres away you will find the legendary cinema Bellaria Kino. Here, the audience can enjoy the performance of the UFA film stars every day.

Since 1870, the Art Nouveau Café Bellaria has been offering exquisite Viennese cuisine and the best wines. Here, so close to Volkstheater, the Kunsthistorischem Museum and MuseumsQuartier, you can combine art and enjoyment. Live piano music Mon - Sat from 7 pm!
