Belvedere
History:
This comprehensive baroque estate consists of two palaces (Upper and Lower Belvedere) and houses today an impressive collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), a successful general and a lover of the arts, commissioned the architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to build the garden villa Belvedere as a summer residence–at that time outside of the city gates.
Upper Belvedere – The biggest Klimt collection worldwide The Belvedere collection’s centrepiece is Gustav Klimt’s artwork, including his golden paintings “The Kiss” and “Judith”. Masterpieces by Schiele and Kokoschka as well as prominent works by the French Impressionists and an outstanding collection of Viennese Biedermeier (Waldmüller, Amerling, Fendi) impress visitors, along with paintings by Makart, Boeckl, Wotruba, Hausner, Hundertwasser and others. The collection also includes Late Gothic masterpieces, such as the Znaim Altar, the works of Michael Pacher, Rueland Frueauf the Elder and Conrad Laib, as well as the opulent art of the Baroque era. Major works by Johann Michael Rottmayr, Daniel Gran and Paul Troger present fascinating aspects of this rich epoch. A special attraction is the collection of famous grimacing “Character Heads” by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt.
Lower Belvedere - Prince Eugene’s living quarters and state rooms The Hall of Grotesques, Marble Gallery and Golden Room reflect the noble owner’s feudal splendor. The Lower Belvedere and the Orangery host impressive, temporary art exhibitions. Palace Stables – Medieval treasury
This building used to accommodate the Prince’s 12 most beautiful horses. Today, the Belvedere’s entire collection of medieval art is on display here.
