Bestattungsmuseum (Funeral Museum)
Funeral directors in pompous uniforms and the “beautiful corpse”, baroque opulence until death and thrift-driven oddities such as Emperor Joseph II’s “flap coffin” which could be used again after opening the flap at the bottom. The museum of Bestattung Wien, the municipal funeral company, features around 1,000 exhibits and provides a comprehensive insight into the death care industry, funeral rituals and the special relationship the Viennese have with death.

Death is surely from Vienna, says Georg Kreisler in one of his famous chansons. Thus, it only seems logical that the only funeral museum worldwide is to be found in Vienna. The collection is on display on the premises of the former Entreprise des Pompes Funebres, which today is the registered office of Wiener Stadtwerke - Bestattung Wien. This extensive museum was opened in 1967 on the occasion of the 60th company anniversary of Bestattung Wien and has since been extended continuously. The extremely interesting and occasionally odd objects and documents concerning “the corpse” make this collection a unique oddity itself.
