Flex

FLEX - the club in the underground
Dub, jungle, electro, techno, nu-skool, dubstep, drum'n'bass - Flex in Vienna presents a great variety of music genres. In 2003, the readers of the prestigious German pop culture magazine Spex elected Flex the best club in the German-speaking area.

In addition to the fixed program lines, concerts in various music styles take place. Local bands and newcomers perform along with successful international acts.

Big names, such as the DJs Pulsinger and Tunakan or Kruder and Dorfmeister put on their music at Flex. Jeff Mills, Ellen Allien, Sven Väth and DJ DSL have performed here, just as the Stereo MCs, Pete Doherty and Arcade Fire, along with Austrian artists like Attwenger and Louie Austen.

Though Flex is very popular, it also polarizes. With the daily “Clubrotation” and the numerous events, Flex certainly is still one of the most interesting clubs and concert venues in Vienna.

With the “Dub-Club” on Mondays and the “Crazy” events featuring techno and house music on Tuesdays, Flex covers all fields of electronic club and dance music.

The G-Stone-Label (Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca) holds fixed events, though irregularly. Alternative rock and indie music dominate several events every week.

Apart from the music, Flex is to be praised for at least one thing: the best pin-ball machine in Vienna–a “High Roller Casino” with many first-class “side-effects”. Right next to the pin-ball machine is a food vending machine with sweets.

Flex was founded in 1990 mainly to host rock concerts. After moving into an abandoned underground railway tunnel at the Donaukanal between the underground station Schottenring and the bridge Augartenbrücke, Flex has progressively worked its way up to the European top–also the club’s sound system is regarded one of the best in Europe. Dress code: Come as you are.

In the warmer seasons, not just the club but also the café in front of the graffiti-sprayed façade at the Donaukanal is well attended. Flex has about 100,000 visitors a year. Word has gotten around that the sound system produces really great bass lines. Just as it always has been, soda water is still free.
