Steinhof
Steinhof and Baumgartner Höhe may be the same geographically. But not by a long shot for Viennese.
Depending on the mental state or the state of health of a "committed" (patient), the chosen designation subtly expresses ― in keeping with the golden Viennese heart ― what ails the person in question.
A clue: "in Steinhof" can mean: somebody is in a psychiatric clinic or else just a tourist, who wants to visit Otto Wagner’s Art Nouveau church. In plain language: “he is out to lunch” (= not of sound mind).
"Baumgartner Höhe" (Hights) is noble. Because, it is in the first place a synonym for the tuberculosis sanatorium of the same name and naturally allows for associations with exclusive health resorts like Semmering. In plain language it implies: "he has tuberculosis". This double entendre lets the Viennese always elegantly off the hook.
Furthermore, it is also a popular local recreation area ― in late autumn and winter, the night stop of thousands of crows. Shades of Hitchcock’s birds.
Otto Wagner’s Church
The Otto Wagner church at Steinhof is one of the most important examples of Viennese Art Nouveau. It was built within the first years of the 20th century. Otto Wagner planned the church down to the smallest detail of the interior décor. Only the windows are by his student Kolo Moser.
